Let's Hope He Doesn't Believe This

According to news reports, president Obama told the New Yorker that the current version of al Qaeda is just the junior varsity.  Here's how one site describes it:

In his New Yorker interview published over the weekend, President Obama stated that current Al Qaeda was “jayvee” – and said that his analogy was often used around the White House. “The analogy we use around here sometimes, and I think is accurate, is if a jayvee team puts on Lakers uniforms that doesn’t make them Kobe Bryant,” Obama said. He then added, “I think there is a distinction between the capacity and reach of a bin Laden and a network that is actively planning major terrorist plots against the homeland versus jihadists who are engaged in various local power struggles and disputes, often sectarian.”

I hope this is just a talking point and that he does not actually believe this.  Think about it.

1.  In the last month, the Iraqi cities of Fallujah and Ramadi have been taken over by al Qaeda.  These are large cities, not just some unimportant crossroads or hill.  These al Qaeda triumphs are hardly actions by the JV team.

2.  A year and a half ago, the American consulate in Benghazi was destroyed and four Americans killed in a terrorist attack.  Obama's people have said that the attackers were not "core" al Qaeda, but were only affiliates.  So that makes the death of our ambassador to Libya the work of associates of the jayvee version of al Qaeda.  It is not much comfort to the family of the slain individuals.

3.  About a third of Syria is now controlled by groups which are part of al Qaeda.  It is an area roughly the size of South Carolina or Indiana.  Is that really something that the junior varsity would do?

4.  Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula continues to hold significant positions in Yemen.  They are not minor.

5.  Then there is Pakistan.  In that nation, al Qaeda holds significant sway in Waziristan and the Northwest Frontier province.  That is a huge area with a large population.

6.  On top of this, we still have Afghanistan.  Maybe Obama separates the Taliban from al Qaeda.  He shouldn't.  They both are still killing Americans.

It would be better for this country if Obama were to recognize the truth and act accordingly.  If he truly believes that there is only a JV version of al Qaeda left, it is likely that dealing with that group will not get the attention that it deserves.  The result will surely be future terror attacks and deaths.
