The Rick Perry Indictment Updated

When the news of the indictment of Texas governor Rick Perry broke, I wrote that it seemed ridiculous.  It appeared that Perry was being indicted for threatening to veto and then vetoing the funding for the office of a district attorney who had been arrested and convicted for driving drunk and who then refused to resign.

I have now had a chance to read the entire indictment and to study the matter further.  The truth is that I was too nice to the office of the prosecutor that got the indictment.  This is beyond ridiculous.  Indeed, if anyone committed a crime for misuse of public office, it is more likely the prosecutor who got the indictment than governor Perry.  And this is not some technical argument that is hard to understand.  If you doubt me, read the piece by uber-leftwing Democrat Jonathan Chait in New York Magazine in which he points out the completely nonsensical nature of the indictment.

This indictment ought to be dropped.  If not, a court ought to dismiss it quickly.
