Anonymous Attack in Lebanon

A huge car bomb was detonated at a market in a Shiite section of Beirut in Lebanon earlier today.  Fifty two people were wounded in the blast.  The area is a stronghold of support for Hezbollah and, despite the lack of any claim of responsibility as of yet, suspicion immediately fell on Sunni forces seeking to take retribution against Hezbollah for its support of the Assad regime in neighboring Syria.

We already have major carnage in Syria with about 110,000 dead so far.  Egypt is melting down, although there are some hopeful signs there today that civil war may be avoided.  Throwing Lebanon into the mix as yet another Arab country with citizens killing each other would just make the Middle East even worse.

Lebanon had its own civil war two decades ago, and it nearly destroyed that country.  Let's hope that this is just an isolated incident and that the Shiites do not feel compelled to take revenge for the bombing.  Otherwise, the spiral towards all out conflict could be underway.
