The Crisis in Central America

The ever - pithy Ann Coulter just tweeted "happy 30th birthday Central American humanitarian crisis."  She really does not miss the mark with that one.  Conditions in Central America have not changed in any way that would lead to the current deluge of illegals coming from that area.  Indeed, I have to add that I have been in Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Belize in the last 18 months, and things seemed better there than had previously been the case.  We hear from the mainstream media about the high number of murders in some of these countries, but the actual statistics show that these numbers are decreasing significantly over the last two years.

It is also worth noting that I have been repeatedly in Costa Rica in the last two years and that country is both peaceful and relatively prosperous.  Costa Rica, of course, is just across the border from Nicaragua and Honduras, but those leaving those countries come to the USA instead.

So what is it that is drawing all these children and adults here at the moment.  The answer comes in one word, "permiso".  It is the Spanish word for permission.  In this context, it means that the people in Central America have gotten the idea that if they can get their children to the USA, those children will be given full permission to stay as well as all manner of support for their needs.  For that, we need to thank president Obama and both his refusal to enforce the immigration laws as well as his statements confirming that, particularly where children are concerned.

Now, Obama is doing nothing to end the crisis.  His big spending proposal is for cash to tend to the children already here, not to stop new arrivals from reaching the USA.  Obama is not supporting a change to the law which would make border closure for children easier.  First he created the crisis and now he is perpetuating it.
