President Obama is out with his proposed budget for fiscal 2012, and the media is already promoting it. The AP article points out in its opening sentence that the budget calls for spending $3.73 billion and projects $1.1 trillion in spending cuts. It makes Obama sound like a man intent on cutting the deficit. Of course, absent action to cut spending, the deficit for the current year will be the largest ever, even dwarfing 2009 which was bloated by the stimulus spending. And those cuts that the AP mentions? Those cuts are actually spread out over 10 years and they represent not spending reductions, but rather cuts from the previously projected spending that was in prior budgets. Only in Washington can we be told that increase spending from $100 billion to $102 billion for a program is a spending cut.
The budget is a non-starter in my opinion. It is posturing for re-election purposes. If the truth is explained clearly to the country, however, I believe that this will hurt Obama big time.
