Will Politics Triumph over Reason?

Writing in The Hill, Brent Budowsky (who also writes for the HuffPo) argues today that the budget battle will be the means to bring back a Democrat majority in the House. According to Budowsky, House Democrats need not vote to support President Obama's budget or the proposals of the House GOP majority. He argues that instead, the House Democrats should stand steadfast against any cuts in spending programs of the federal government. According to Budowsky, the current support for budget cutting will melt away once people see that the programs cut will include some that benefit them. "Shared pain" will mean an instant large decline in support for the Republicans' budget cutting adventures.

It is interesting to see someone argue about how to deal with the budget and never even mention the possible effects that the decision will have on the US economy and the future of the country. Budowsky tells the Democrats not to worry about what is good for the country; he thinks they should stick with only those things that will be good for the party. How despicable!

the truth is that the American people are not dumb, and they are certainly not the spoiled idiots that Budowsky makes them out to be. Most people know that we cannot keep spending money we do not have. That is the path to ruin and bankruptcy. I strongly believe that a rational approach to spending cuts -- even one that includes reform of entitlement programs -- will gain the support of the American people. There is no need to make drastic cuts of everything all at once. There has to be the political will, however, to get the level of spending back down to a more reasonable level. Any other course is untenable.
