This morning I saw a video excerpt of Bill Maher's show on HBO in which he says that he does not believe that Obama is a Christian. Maher thinks Obama is a secular humanist like his mother was. Normally, I do not care what Bill Maher thinks; he is a nasty ultra progressive bomb thrower who covers up his attacks by claiming to be a comedian. Nevertheless, Maher was not joking here; he seriously does not believe Obama when the president says he is a Christian.
The question, of course, is this: for the last two years, folks like Maher mocked those Americans who say that they believe that Obama is a Muslim like his father and not a Christian. Maher is one of that group. Why is it acceptable rather than loony to disbelieve that the president is a Christian and follows his late mother's beliefs but unacceptable and loony to disbelieve that he is a Christian and follows his late father's beliefs? The truth is that president Obama says he is a Christian and deserves to be taken at his word on this point. His words and his actions make clear that he is not an evangelical. I choose to accept his statements at face value rather than thinking like maher that he is lying about something so fundamental as his religion.
