According to the headline on Yahoo News this morning, more than one-half of all recently hired federal employees are being paid at a rate in excess of one hundred thousand dollars per year. When you factor in the better benefits and pensions from the federal government, the cost for such employees is extraordinary compared to the average salary in private industry. Without question, the federal salaries are just too high. While I am sure that those who got the jobs in question are certain that they are being at best fairly paid, the true question is whether or not as a society we can afford to pay government employees nearly twice what private sector workers earn. In the current economic conditions, the answer is undoubtedly no! President Obama has announced a pay rate freeze for federal workers, but this will not freeze salaries earned as workers move up the ladder at the government. Each higher rank will still bring higher pay, so the freeze will actually freeze very little. It is time for the new congress to pass a pay reduction or, at least, a true freeze for a longer period than the two years Obama announced.
