Internal population migration is the net number of Americans moving into or out of a state (it counts all folks other than foreign immigrants). Quick!! Without looking this up, try putting the following large states in order of the internal population migration since 2000: California, Texas, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan and New Jersey. these are the nine states with the largest populations as of 2000.
Here's the answer: Texas has the biggest net gain with Florida second. Third is Pennsylvania which had a small loss of about 0.3% of population. the other six states all had large losses with California and New York leading the list. California lost the most people and New York lost the biggest percentage. In other words, the states that seem to keep and gain people are the most conservative and frugal, while those that have the greatest trouble retaining their citzens are the most liberal and high taxed. It used to be said that Americans could "vote with their feet" by moving out of states whose government they did not like. Seems like there is a lot of truth in that old remark.
