The Trans-Pacific Partnership

The Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement (frequently called TPP) is giving rise to some incredible results.  The text of TPP has not yet been made public.  Congressmen and senators were able to read earlier drafts, but even they haven't seen the final version.  Nevertheless, many of the candidates for president in both parties have rushed to voice their opinions of TPP.  Opponents of TPP include Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, and Donald Trump.  Trump said that TPP was poorly negotiated by stupid people.  Think about that.  Maybe the conversation went something like this:

Reporter:  Mr. Trump, can you tell us the main point in the TPP?
Trump:  I haven't seen TPP, so I really don't know.
Reporter:  Do you have a position on TPP?
Trump:  It's a terrible agreement.  It was poorly negotiated by stupid people.  Can you believe what a bad job they did?

Even worse is Hillary Clinton.  She actually was involved with the negotiations when she was secretary of state.  Not long ago, she praised TPP as the "gold standard" of trade deals.  Now that it has been signed, she has come out against it.  Unless Hillary was illegally given the text of TPP, she doesn't know how, if at all, it changed from the draft she called the best trade pact ever.  The reality is that Hillary doesn't actually care what is in TPP.  All she cares about is getting the endorsement of the AFL-CIO, a union group that opposes all trade pacts.  Hillary doesn't care what is good for the USA; all she worries about is what is good for her quest for the presidency.

Bernie Sanders, at least, is consistent in his opposition to TPP.  He is against any trade deal because it might help the corporations that engage in international trade.  It's an idiotic position, but it is one that he doesn't change.

The truth is that all three of these candidates show their shortcomings when we look at their reactions to TPP.
