The Mainstream Media Effect

During the aftermath of hurricane Sandy, I have had no access to television, newspapers or the internet. My news sources have been limited to either CBS radio news or ABC radio news. Instead of getting full information like usual, I have only gotten the news that the mainstream outlets broadcast. It has been a true eye-opener.

For example, yesterday, it seemed that the biggest story of the day was not that rescue and recovery efforts were underway in this area. No, the big story was that president Obama and governor Christie landed in Brigantine, New Jersey and Christie hugged a crying woman. Also, Obama told the folks where he landed that he would cut through red tape for them. There are people still stranded in homes surrounded by water and rescue efforts for them are ongoing, but the media is telling us about the politicians. There are whole towns on the Jersey shore threatened by gas explosions but the media is telling us about the politicians.

I have to say that the media never fails to disappoint me. Why can’t they stick to news of what is important?
