I just read the umpteenth article in the mainstream media discussing how the vote by the senate against calling new witnesses in the impeachment trial "revealed just who the Republican Party is."
Think about that. Supposedly, the fact that all the Republicans but two voted against new witnesses shows these senators to be some sort of political operatives who only care about their party and not the country. But why is that? What about the question that is never asked? Doesn't the fact that every single Democrat in the senate voted for adding new witnesses to the impeachment trial show that these Democrats are political operatives who only care about their party rather than the country? Put another way, why should we all just assume that a vote for new witnesses is a good thing for the country while a vote against new witnesses is just political?
We all know that there was an article published by the New York Times which relies on anonymous sources to claim that in an unpublished manuscript of John Bolton's upcoming book, Bolton says that Trump discussed trying to tie aid to Ukraine to an investigation by Ukraine into the Bidens. Are we to believe that the NY Times is correct? Does the Times even actually have a source who said this? We don't know. We do know that the Times published article after article about the collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russians in the 2016 elections and that NONE of those articles turned out to be correct. Why should this be any different? And even if the article is correct, we know that Trump never actually withheld the aid to Ukraine. Ukraine got the aid (that Obama had refused to give it by the way) and that no investigation of the Bidens was undertaken or even announced. Impeachment of a president can be based upon what a president does, but not on what he only discusses with an aide inside the White House. So again, why is it to be assumed that new witnesses are needed?
The truth is that what the impeachment trial has really revealed is that the Democrats ran a dishonest political game to try to get rid of Trump or to tarnish his reputation prior to this year's election.
I guess we'll have to wait for November to see what a majority of the country took away from this impeachment circus.
