A few days ago, I wrote some posts about the escalation of the confrontation with Iran in the Middle East. I got responses from readers who told me that I was writing "a novel" and being an alarmist. Here's an update for those who think that I exaggerated the situation.
The New York Times is reporting that the recent blasts at bases of Shiite militias in Iraq (yes, IRAQ!!) were the result of Israeli air strikes on those bases. The militia bases struck by the blasts were being used to house missiles being shipped by Iranian forces to Syria. These were intermediate range missiles that could be fired from Syria into Israel and hit nearly every part of that country.
I have no idea if the Times report is correct. Certainly, the New York Times is no fan of the Israeli government or of accuracy in journalism. Nevertheless, if we assume that the story is accurate, then that means that Israeli air force planes left Israel, flew hundreds of miles across Jordan and Iraq, hit bases in a country that is not actively confronting Israel, and bombed bases there. That is an extraordinary escalation by Israel. The last (and only other) time that Israeli planes hit any target in Iraq was in the 1980s when the Israeli air force took out the Iraqi nuclear weapons facility in that country.
Events are moving towards a major confrontation with Iran in the region. That is true whether or not readers like to believe it.
