More Tunnels, Less Peace

There was another of those deadly tunnel collapses in the Gaza Strip yesterday.  Two Hamas terrorists were killed when the tunnel they were in collapsed on them.  Last week other tunnels collapsed with a death toll of up to seven Hamas terrorists.  The cause of the collapsing tunnels has been heavy rains that hit the region.

What is the effect of these tunnel disasters?  First, we have the obvious.  There are fewer terrorists today than there were ten days ago.  Second, these collapses show that Hamas is hard at work rebuilding and expanding the tunnel system that Israeli forces destroyed during the last round of fighting.  Third, the Israeli search for counter measures to render the tunnels worthless has been given a strong boost.  The people who live near Gaza are rightfully concerned that terrorists may infiltrate into Israel under ground to carry out attacks.  Last, another war is much closer.  Israel is developing measures to counter the tunnels.  Hamas knows that once that happens, it will lose its best weapon much in the way that Iron Dome made the Hamas missiles into a minor threat.  Hamas will attack rather than watch its tunnels become useless.

In the meantime, let's all hope and pray for more heavy rains in the region.
