The Trump Temper Tantrum -- It isn't Pretty

Donald Trump is demonstrating once again that he really hasn't got the right personality to be president.  Today, Trump is busy accusing Ted Cruz of "illegally stealing" the Iowa caucus, and Trump is also calling for a new election.  Trump is also busy castigating Cruz for the supposed dirty tricks carried out by his campaign against Ben Carson.

It's worth looking at these two things in some detail.  First, as to the charge the Cruz stole the election, Trump gives essentially no details.  He just says that he was ahead in the polls and the votes came out differently.  It's a classic Trump move:  he was supposedly winning before he lost so it had to be something nefarious for that to be the outcome.  The reality is that Trump is behaving like a two-year-old.  He doesn't seem to be able to deal with disappointment.  What will he do next?  Maybe he will fall to the floor, flail his arms and legs and scream "NO, NO, NO!"  It's a full scale Trump temper tantrum.

The last Trump temper tantrum came last week when Donald refused to attend the GOP debate on Fox News because Megyn Kelly had asked him (and many others) a hard question at the first debate.  Trump tried to leverage FNC into dumping Kelly off the debate platform, but FNC boss Roger Ailes properly refused.  Trump then said he wouldn't attend and set up his own event to conflict with the debate.  Ahead of time, Trump told the world that no one would now watch the debate; the Trump campaign manager actually predicted that the debate audience would be 1 million people.  Instead, the debate drew a huge crowd (somewhere between 13 and 15 million people when the final numbers come in) and the Trump event which was carried by both CNN and MSNBC drew less than 1 million people.  Trump's temper tantrum cost him the chance to influence the Iowa voters and, he now concedes, cost him the election.

We really cannot afford to have a president who throws temper tantrums.  We need a level headed, calm and steady leader.  Too much depends on that.

As far as the attack on Cruz is concerned, Trump is doing another of his many silly routines that are much like his tantrums.  Let's back up.  Just before the caucuses began in Iowa, the Carson campaign tweeted out that Carson would not be going to New Hampshire or South Carolina but would be going instead home to Florida.  He would, however, be at the National Prayer Breakfast on Thursday.  CNN picked this up and reported that Carson was leaving the campaign trail.  At that point, some of the people in the Cruz campaign thought Carson was dropping out and repeated the news.  The Carson campaign clarified that Carson was not dropping out but just taking two days off.  That was during the caucuses themselves.  No one knows if the Cruz people even saw the followup report.

Trump describes all this as a dirty trick by the Cruz campaign.  It's just another baseless charge by Trump against Cruz.  It seems that Trump is desperate to find a new line of attack against Cruz.  He's letting his emotions get the better of him.  No doubt Trump is angry that he lost Iowa.  Still latching onto this silly story is not the way to go.

We all wondered how Trump would react to his loss in Iowa.  Now we can see.  He's throwing a temper tantrum and he's getting emotional and striking out.  It isn't a pretty sight.  Indeed, if Trump keeps it up, he may well lose in New Hampshire too.
