The US navy is testing hyper-velocity projectiles that can be shot from retrofitted 5 inch guns. The shells travel at speed up to 3.3 miles per second and are expected to be accurate up to 45 miles away from the gun. Right now, 5 inch guns fire shells that go only a fraction as fast and are accurate up to 15 miles. In other words, every ship with a 5 inch gun, which is nearly every ship in the navy, will suddenly have a much greater coverage area. These new shells will also fire up to ten rounds a minute, so that they can be used to shoot down incoming missiles, planes and ships almost in real time.
This weapons is a game changer, and since it can be used in retrofitted cannons, it will be quickly available and at relatively low cost.
