Representative Elizabeth Esty, a Democrat from the 5th congressional district, supposedly was horrified to discover that her chief of staff was abusing women staffers in the DC office. Here's Esty's statement issued yesterday:
Think about this. Esty discovered the problem in "the spring of 2016" but she's only talking about it now. When she hired a new chief of staff to replace the offender, she gave him a severance package and a letter of recommendation so that he could go out and find new employment where he could continue harassing women. In other words, Esty covered up this entire matter. Her goal was not to help the women on her staff who had been harassed but rather to protect herself and her chances of re-election from the negative publicity that would result from the story getting out.
Esty is not notable for any accomplishments achieved for the 5th district. She's just another liberal Democrat with a non-descript record. Of course, that was until now. Esty has become a symbol of the refusal of Democrats to actually stand up for the women who are being harassed. It's not just Harvey Weinstein or Bill Clinton. Esty is just as guilty for covering this mess up as they are for doing it in the first place.
She needs to resign from Congress and to let someone new take over in the 5th. Of course, she won't resign, but she surely ought to.
