The 2012 Budget -- the fight begins

In perhaps one of the more amusing and revealing moments of the last few years, the budget battle for 2012 began to unfold today. this morning congressman Paul Ryan gave an outline of some parts of the GOP budget proposal for 2012. The plan calls for cuts from the currently projected levels of more than 4 trillion dollars over the next ten years. while that sounds enormous, it is less than a ten percent cut in spending during that time. Since the full plan has not yet been released, none of the details of particular cuts have been explained. The full plan will be made public on Tuesday.

Now for the amusing/revealing part. Even though the details have not yet been made public, Democrats are lining up to call the GOP plan extreme, a plan which will "gut the safety net of the most needy in society." Oh yeah? How in the world do they know? The truth is that the Democrats do not care what the GOP wants to cut; the Democrat position is that no cuts are good cuts. Indeed, they want to use the budget cuts as a political tool for retaining power. The undisputable fact that the USA is approaching bankruptcy unless something is done has not seemed to penetrate the space between their ears. Or, maybe they do understand, but they care more about holding power than about doing what is good for the country.
