The Essence of the Liberal Position

Writing in the Daily Beast, super liberal Eleanor Clift puts forth the essence of the left's view of the federal budget: "There is a serious challenge in getting the budget under control. It's not a crisis, but it is a partisan confrontation about the role of government, and Obama showed in his speech today that he is ready to seize the moment on behalf of his party's ideals and constituents."

It is important to understand just how misguided Clift and her fellow liberals are. The budget deficit is "not a crisis" according to Clift. Let me repeat that: the budget deficit is NOT A CRISIS!!!!!!!! How out of touch can one be? Even though the president's speech was devoid of the substance of a plan to deal with the deficit, Obama was clear about one thing, namely that the budget deficit is indeed a crisis which, if left uncontrolled, will swallow up every federal program. Obama pointed out that in a few short years, all federal spending will go to pay for just Medicare, Social Security, Medicaid and interest on the debt. Even national defense will have to be funded through borrowing if nothing is done. That sure sounds like a crisis, but the true believers in the liberal orthodoxy just do not accept this. There is no crisis. THERE IS NO CRISIS!! In other words, these liberals do not believe that Obama means what he says.

Clift describes the problem as a "partisan confrontation about the role of government". Eleanor, WAKE UP!!!! It is not a partisan confrontation; it is a struggle for the survival of the USA. Clift says that the real issue should be jobs, but that the Republican messaging machine has managed to make the budget a bigger issue. Once again Eleanor, WAKE UP!! If the budget deficit is not brought under control, there will be no jobs; the economy will just collapse.

Finally, Clift lauds Obama for his rejection of the budget proposal from Paul Ryan and the GOP. Clift thinks that skewering Ryan's proposal as pessimistic and heartless is a great way to proceed. One can only imagine what Clift would say if the Republican's called Obama's proposal naive and without substance, words nowhere near as negative as those Obama used. We would hear about how Obama is just so smart (he went to Harvard, you know). We would hear about how Obama cares about the poor. We would hear about how the GOP is owned by the corporations. the one thing we would not and could not hear is an answer to the actual criticism.
