Florida polling

As one of the most populous states in teh country, Florida is extremely important in presidential elections. Everyone must remember 2000 when Florida made all the difference. In 2008, florida swung behind Obama by a reasonable margin. In truth, it is unlikely that any Republican could win the election without taking Florida. right now, things are not looking good for Obama in the sunshine state. Quinnipiac just released a poll of Florida refistered voters who said that 47% approve of the job obama is doing while 49% disapprove; 40% would vote for obama for re-election while 42% would vote for an unnamed GOP opponent; and 45% said that obama deserved four more years while 48% said he did not. Since registered voters skew more towards the democrats than likely voters, Obama is actually in worse shape with the actual electorate in Florida than these number indicate.

Obviously, there is still nearly a year and a half until the election. That means that anything can and will happen during that time to change the dynamic of the race for the presidency. Indeed, no one is even sure who the likely GOP challenger will be. Nevertheless, a poll like this should set off warning bells at the White House. Were obama to actually lose Florida in the election by something like the 54-46 margin indicated by the poll, he will soon be headed for the new job of "former president".
