One More Important Bit Of Info about Las Vegas -- Machine Guns are Illegal

All day long, we've been hearing that guns are easy to have in Nevada, and that's part of the reason why the Las Vegas shooter was able to have a machine gun to use to spray the crowd.  That's just nonsense.

Let's start at the beginning.  No matter what Nevada law says about guns, federal law is clear.  Since 1986, no one has been able to legally make and sell a machine gun to private citizens in the USA.  And to be clear, no private citizen has been able to buy such a machine gun.  The only exceptions to the ban on machine guns comes with regard to those weapons which were made prior to 1986, so we're now talking about machine guns that are at least 31 years old.  In order to buy an old machine gun, a private citizen has to comply with some very onerous and stringent federal requirements.  It's not an easy thing to do.

I mention this because the usual gun control crowd is out trying to make use of the tragedy in Las Vegas to claim the need for even more gun control laws.  But they better be careful.  The main weapon used in Vegas was a fully automatic machine gun.  It's hard to imagine that there could be a stricter set of controls on any weapon than the controls already placed on that type of machine gun.  America has very tight and very extensive controls on weapons of that sort; yet, the shooter still got such weapons and used them to kill a great many people.  The Vegas shooting showed that even when we have extremely tight gun control laws, crazy shooters will still get around those laws.
