The Democrats have been moving away from support for America's traditional ally in the Middle East, Israel. Still, events in the next weeks will tell us a lot about how far that move has gone. In Minnesota, Keith Ellison is leaving Congress to run for Minnesota Attorney General. There will be a party convention to nominate the candidate for his congressional seat. Right now the front runner is Ilhan Omar, a woman who came to the USA as a refugee from Somalia some years ago.
Here's a tweet sent by Omar a few years back:
"Israel has hypnotized the world, may Allah awaken the people and help them see the evil doings of Israel. #Gaza #Palestine #Israel"
This is not a potential congressman siding more with the Palestinians than the Israelis. It is a major declaration that Israel is "evil". Governor Mark Dayton, a Democrat, has endorsed Omar for the seat, and she is likely to win the nomination.
If she were a Republican, every member of the GOP running for office across the USA would be asked endlessly if they endorse Omar and her anti-Israel position. Hopefully, some of the Democrats will be asked the same question about Omar. Is the entire party becoming anti-Israel? We ought to know.
