The lack of clarity and the media

It has been nearly a week since the protests in Egypt came forward full force into the world's consciousness. As of today, we still do not know who is in charge (if anyone), what are the demands of the protestors, what is the course likely to be chosen by Mubarak, what is the position of the Egyptian army, what is the involvement of the Moslem Brotherhood, how likely is it that the extreme level of protests will spread to Yemen or Jordan or Iran, for that matter. We do know that there are protests and that many have been killed. Beyond this, the rest of the news seems to consist of journalists promoting their own views which seem to have little relation to reality.

Here is a good example: the Moslem Brotherhood has been described as the creator of Al Qaeda, a hard line Islamic jihadist fundamentalist group, and an association seeking to improve the lives of the Egyptian people. It has been compared to evangelical Christians in the USA on CNN but elsewher to the group behind the Ayatollah Khomeini in Iran. Guess what! It cannot be both.

One would hope that after so many days, the various news organizations would be able to gather at least some rudimentary information about what is actually happening on the ground rather than just reporting the ideology of the reporters.
