It's sad -- Mike Huckabee

What a waste of time. On his book tour, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee is garnering all kinds of attention for things that are about as important as soggy toast. The latest is the brouhaha about Huck's saying that it was unfortunate that our society glamorizes pregnancies by unwed celebrities like Natalie Portman. Huckabee said that most single mothers don't make millions for appearing in a movie but rather are poor, uneducated and dependent on government assistance. That has turned in the press into Huckabee "slamming" Portman.

Let's get this straight. Who Cares? Huckabee is right; it is generally much harder for a single mother to raise a family than for a couple to do so. It is a question of time, availability and possible income. Sure, one of the parents in a traditional couple could be a demon and a single mother can be a saint, but the general truth remains the same: it is better for the child to be raised in a full family home. Anyone who takes offense at that is just kidding himself or herself.

So why the big deal about what Huckabee said. Well, last week Huckabee got it wrong when he said that president Obama was raised in Kenya and should have said that Obama was raised in Indonesia. Of course, Huckabee's point was that Obama did not have a traditional American childhood, which is true.

If Huckabee decides that he wants to run again for president, something that I think is unlikely, it will be fine for the media to punce on his every word. It goes with that territory. Until then, however, there are a lot more important news stories out there than this nonsense. (And I don't mean Charlie Sheen's latest interview!)
