Which is Worse -- 3

Today's installment of "Which is Worse" asks a simple question:

Which is worse:

1) Laying off workers replaced by technological advances; or

2) Losing businesses that fail to keep up with the competition?

This may sound like a simple question to which there is only one answer. After all, isn't it better to keep part of a company's workforce employed as it moves to robots and computers to perform certain tasks than to see all of the employees lose their jobs as competitors use technology to to undercut the company's cost structure? The surviving company would still employ many folks and it would pay taxes. The surviving company might also find new areas in which to expand that might provide new jobs for the community. On the other hand, however, once the company closes its doors, it will be gone for good.

Despite the seemingly clear choice, there are still many who do not grasp this reality. How many times have you heard about the "evil" management that is trampling on workers by adopting new technologies?
