Good Bye Mr. Crist

The gubernatorial campaign by Charlie Crist in Florida just went up in smoke.  Crist, you may recall, is the former governor who ran for the senate and lost in the Republican primary.  After that loss, he did not accept the will of the people and ran instead as an independent for the seat.  He lost again.  Then since he knew that he was unlikely ever to win election again as a Republican, he switched parties and became a Democrat.  This year, he has been the front runner among Democrats in the election for governor.  Crist not only switched parties, he also switched positions on nearly everything.  Even so, he was doing well in the polls, at least at this point in the campaign.

Now that all should change.  There was detailed testimony this week that Crist sold judicial appointments while governor.  Basically, according to the testimony, Crist took very large campaign contributions from a south Florida attorney and, in exchange, let that attorney pick judicial appointments who would be likely to rule in favor of that lawyer's firm in pending cases.

While I have not read the transcript of the testimony, the summary in the press makes it seem likely that for the next year Crist is more likely to be focused on avoiding a criminal conviction than on regaining his office as governor.
