I made the mistake of looking at policies on the health exchange Connecticut today. The policy which we currently have is from United Healthcare, but that company is pulling out of the individual market in Connecticut. As a result, we need to replace it. Here's what I found:
There are only two insurers that still sell policies in Connecticut, at least in my county. The coverage for the policies being offered for 2017 is much worse, MUCH WORSE, than the current coverage. For example, under the current policy, there is a $35 copay for a primary care physician and a $45 copay for a specialist. Lab tests have a $30 copay. Under a comparable 2017 plan, there is still a $35 copay for a primary care physician, but specialists and lab tests must be paid for in full until the deductible is met. The deductible is $6500. That means that specialists and lab tests will cost another $550 per month spread over the year. And did I mention that this plan costs about 35% more than the current plan?
There is a plan that provides similar coverage to the one we have now, but it is the most expensive Gold plan offered. It would raise the monthly premium by over 70%.
President Obama promised that Obamacare would cut healthcare costs. He lied. Now, as the premiums soar through the roof, Obama is still telling us that subsidies will keep everything affordable. That's another lie. First of all, not everyone gets a subsidy. More important, however, the coverage offered is getting so much worse and so much more expensive that even having health insurance doesn't mean all that much. If someone needs to see a specialist on a regular basis and to get lab tests as well, the cost of medical care is priced much, much higher. It is hard to see how the average middle income family can deal with these costs.
