What President Trump Must Do

Now that the endless election has actually ended, it's time to look ahead to what happens after the Inauguration.  So much was said during the campaigns that it cannot all get accomplished at once.  There is limited time and there are limited resources.  President Trump will have to decide what items should get the nation's attention first.  These are my suggestions:

1.  There are certain promises that Trump made such an integral part of his campaign that they cannot be ignored.  As a result, he will have to start working on them in the first month after assuming office.  These promises include the following:

     a.  President Trump will have to appoint a Supreme Court Justice from one of the names on his list.  No one else would be acceptable.
     b.  Trump will also have to immediately rescind all of the Obama executive orders and executive actions regarding immigration enforcement -- or more precisely the lack of immigration enforcement.  Congress should also be asked to pass Kate's Law which would imprison those who are convicted felons and who return to the USA after being deported.
     c.  If Congressional action is needed to start construction of the border wall, Trump will need to ask for the necessary funds.  There must be an immediate start to preparation of the design for segments of the wall and that must be promptly followed by the start of construction.  Dealing with Mexico over payment for the cost of the wall need not be completed before construction begins.
     d.  A bill to repeal Obamacare and plan to replace that disaster of a law has to be put forward in Congress.
     e.  A bill to change the way veterans get health care also must be introduced in Congress with adequate pressure applied to push it through.
     f.  The steps needed to speed up economic growth must be begun.  These include a measure to cut corporate income tax rates and to provide incentives for corporation to bring money back from overseas to the USA.  Any of this that can be done by executive order should be put in place right away.  Most of it requires legislation, however, so that bill should be drafted and introduced in the House.
     g.  Some of the Obama era regulations that so clearly overstep the bounds of proper federal action should be rescinded by executive order.  These would include the rules on zoning to encourage certain types of construction in the suburbs, moves to control wet lands, ponds and puddles, and the like.  Regulations that have caused havoc or extreme increases in the cost of doing business for America's companies should be stricken as well.  It might be good to have an event each week where one such regulation is expunged.
     h.  A major push should be announced to deport violent felons who are in the country illegally.  After the announcement, there should be action taken to actually achieve this goal.

2.  The more complicated items should be set up for action over the next year.
     a.  A plan to return control of education to local governments should be produced and enacted.
     b.  Each federal department should come up with a list of programs that can be ended or reorganized in order to save up to 10% of expenditures.  After that, these suggestions should be put into legislation if needed and presented to Congress for action.
     c.  Funding for the military should be reorganized and increased.  Waste should be cut.  Needs should be met.
     d.  Infrastructure programs should be put in place.  It is not enough for the president to talk about this.  Unlike what happened under Obama, the program must actually get completed.
     e.  A long range plan to eradicate ISIS must be developed and implemented.
     f.  Negotiation of new trade deals with other countries need to be commenced.  The TPP must be reopened and renegotiated if possible.  If not, it should be junked.  Similarly NAFTA should be reopened for negotiation.

There's a lot more that has to be done.  The above is just a start.  Nevertheless, if even half of the items above could get put in place, it would be an extraordinary victory for the American people.
