Pelosi In Denial

Wow!  I just read a piece of the transcript of Nancy Pelosi's interview on one of the Sunday morning shows.  John Dickerson asked her about those who want a "new direction" for the Democrats.  Then came Pelosi's moment.  She said that Democrats don't need or want a new direction.  The problem in the election was a failure of messaging.

It's an amazing outlook.  Two weeks before the election, the consensus of pollsters and analysts was that the Democrats might take back control of the House by gaining more than 30 seats.  Even right before the election, these same people told us that the Dems would gain about 25 seats.  The reality is that they gained 5 or 6.  It was a calamity in the House for the Dems.  In the Senate, the gurus gave the Dems a strong likelihood of taking control. The chances of the GOP holding 52 seats as it did was given about 8% likelihood by the analysts at 538 blog.  Another calamity for the Democrats took place in the Senate.  Trump was surely going to lose to Clinton according to the pollsters and pundits, except he didn't.  So what happened to the message?  What does Pelosi think was wrong in race after race after race?  Can she really think it possible that in states that had not voted for the GOP for a generation there was a sudden failure in messaging?

I truly wonder if Pelosi actually means what she said.  If she does, then the Democrats are betting their future on a total failure by the GOP and Trump.  The Dems won't be winning back supporters with their message; it has been rejected.  They have to hope that Trump is a disaster so that people have nowhere else to go but back to the Dems.  The reality, however, is that Trump is going to dismantle the Obama/Democrat policies.  That will likely lead to faster economic growth and higher incomes for the country.  All those new GOP voters will not be unhappy with that outcome.

For the last many years, one common story in the mainstream media has been whether or not the Republicans would be able to survive.  We were told over and over again that the GOP was on the verge of imploding.  Now, as we watch, it is the Democrats who are going down that road.  What a switch.
