Donald Trump had a meeting with Masayoshi Son of Softbank today. When the meeting ended, President Elect Trump sent out two tweets. Here they are:
- Masa (SoftBank) of Japan has agreed to invest $50 billion in the U.S. toward businesses and 50,000 new jobs....
- Donald J. Trump
@realDonaldTrump 31 minutes ago - Masa said he would never do this had we (Trump) not won the election!
Think about what Trump is saying. A major Japanese company is going to invest a huge amount in the USA. The investment will create new businesses and tens of thousands of new jobs. That is truly something to celebrate, right?
Despite the great news, it is worth taking a fast look at the immediate reaction from the mainstream media. Basically, the reaction splits into two parts. One group says that Softbank was already planning on the investment and that Trump did nothing. This group bases its conclusion on an earlier announcement that Softbank was planning to raise about 100 billion dollars for investments in the next few years. It is quite a stretch to claim that an intent to raise funds in the next few years is the same as committing to put a huge investment in the USA, but that's the leap that the mainstream media is making. Otherwise, they would have to credit Trump (gasp!) with achieving something very good.
The second group in the mainstream media says that this investment is akin to a bribe. Softbank tried to merge T-Mobile and Sprint a few years back, but the move was blocked by the Obama Justice Department. According to media speculation, this newly announced investment is designed to convince Trump to approve that merger. Again, this is an amazing conclusion. There is nothing to suggest that there is any deal regarding a proposed Sprint/T-Mobile merger or even any involvement of such a merger in the investments by Softbank. The reporters now questioning the propriety of this Softbank investment are the same people who saw nothing wrong when Bill and Hillary Clinton got tens of millions personally from people with business before Hillary's state department. The Clintons got enormous personal gain from those who needed Hillary's help, but that was just a mere coincidence. Now, Trump arranges a major benefit for the American people from a company which has no business needing presidential input and the media questions its propriety.
It's sad. These heads of these media people must be exploding. Trump isn't even president yet, and he's doing more than Obama managed in eight years.
