Taiwan or Not

The president of Taiwan called Donald Trump to congratulate him on his victory.  Trump took the call and spoke to the leader of our ally for a few minutes.

GASP!!!!!!!!! The mainstream media can hardly breathe.  They may faint.  Oh no!!!!

Since that call, we have been treated to a steady diet of upset and outrage from the left.  The president of the USA cannot speak to the leader of Taiwan and hasn't since the days of Richard Nixon.  It's part of our deal with China.  Trump should know that, right?  China might retaliate!

It's amusing to watch this happen.  Forty years ago, Nixon worked out a deal with China under which America agreed to pretend that there was only one China and that Taiwan was part of it.  Nevertheless, America would maintain its defense ties to Taiwan but would nevertheless break formal diplomatic ties with that country.  It was a deal that let the USA split the Communist world alliance especially that of the USSR with China and to reopen ties with Beijing.  Well, things have changed since then.  The USA and China now have a great many ties, and that relationship has tilted strongly in favor of the Chinese in recent years.  America never does anything that might anger the Chinese, and they do pretty much whatever they want.  It's the basic outline of nearly all of Obama's foreign policy:  we accommodate while others do what they want.  It's also a policy outline that Trump says he will not be following.

Is it possible that Trump spoke to the Taiwanese leader in a signal to Beijing that things have changed?  Could it be that the days of a one-way relationship are over and Trump is making sure the Chinese know?  The media doesn't even consider this possibility.  Nope, we're just told that it was scandalous that Trump spoke to the Taiwanese leader.

It's worth remembering that when president Obama spoke to Cuba after forty years, the media went into a near meltdown of praise.  It was such a wonderful thing!  When Trump speaks to Taiwan, it's just the worst possible thing.
