The Democrat running for attorney general of Connecticut, George Jepsen (no, not George Jetson) spent about half of his career as an assistant lawyer for a union. As Jepsen makes clear in his campaign materials, he is a strong supporter of the union movement. His serivce in the state legislature reveals the same thing.
The truth is that a union lawyer is the last thing that Connecticut needs at this point. The battles of the next four years will be principally about cutting costs and "right-sizing" government. The biggest opponents of these moves have beeen the state employee unions. I am not anti-union, but the last thing we should be worrying about now is whether or not state employees have to get smaller or no raises and reduced benefits. They are already extremely well paid and have great benefits. Moving the state employees closer to what worker in the private sector make should not be the subject of rational opposition. Whoever is elected governor will need the support of the Attorney General in the battles with the unions that are sure to follow. Jepsen is not a likely ally in that battle. The last thing we need now is another union guy in government.
