This afternoon, after meeting with Palestinian Authority president Abbas, President Obama called "for sharply limiting Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip". Obama also announced a $400 million aid package for Gaza and the West Bank.
"The situation in Gaza is unsustainable," Obama declared. As reported by the AP, Obama "said the attention of the world is on the problem because of the tragedy of the Israeli raid that killed nine people trying to bring in supplies."
So there you have it. Obama has no backbone. The Israelis get attacked by "peace activists" when they try to enforce a legal blockade and the US response is to try to split the difference. Obama cannot say that Israel was right or even that Israel was wrong (which it was not). No, Obama has to call to keep the blockade but to cut it back so that it will no longer be effective.
Think of it this way: Obama wants building supplies allowed into Gaza. How do you build a bunker? How do you build hard storage for missiles? How do you build military installations? That's right--you need building supplies.
Obama wants no limits except for weapons. So will the ships manned by "peace activists" now stop for inspection? Of course not. If they get rid of half the blockade with one bogus "tragedy", it will not take much more for them to think that they can get rid of the rest of the blockade by ensnaring Israel in another attack.
Obama has people around him who should know better. The problem is that Obama is the president. He has the instincts of a social worker, not a president.
Hopefully, the Israelis will tell him to get lost. It is not Obama's country that will get hit with missiles if they get into Gaza.
