The news today is that General Motors is abandoning its plan to increase the number of shifts making the Chevy Volt. The company had announced a few months ago that it was going to increase the work force at the Volt plan with the addition of a second shift. Now GM is saying that by making the plant more efficient, it will increase output to 60,000 Volts per year in 2012. GM says that the shift has nothing to do with the fact that the Volt is just not selling. The company set a goal of selling 10,000 of the electric cars in 2011, but it has sold less than 4000 vehicles so far and sales are not accelerating. You have to wonder why GM would build 60,000 cars next year if it cannot even sell 10,000 of them this year.
Maybe GM can outfit each Volt with a solar panel from Solyndra and sell all of the output to the federal government. That seems to be the only way this car will ever be profitable.
