Does anyone remember the WIN buttons of the mid 1970's. They were a symbol of the program put forward by president Gerald Ford to "Whip Inflation Now!" Ford's program was a flop; it generated little support and was dropped not long after it was proposed. Today, it seems that the "Pass the bill now" chants from president Obama are going the way of Ford's WIN buttons.
The Senate is going to vote today or tomorrow on whether or not to start debate on the president's bill. It will take 60 affirmative votes to start that debate. The accepted wisdom is that the GOP will vote no, and the bill will be defeated. But that is not the end of the story. It seems that there are about a dozen or so Democrats who may also vote no. If that happens, the president's bill will lose by close to something like 59 to 41. If that happens, it will be the end of all of the Obama nonsense regarding his tax plan, excuse me, his jobs bill. Obama will not be able to blame the GOP if his own Democrat senators vote against the bill in droves.
My guess is that there will be no vote held in the Senate. I doubt that Harry Reid will want to put his members on the spot to vote no or yes once he realizes that many will actually vote no. Obama will continue to promote the bill without the vote since he can still blame the GOP; the facts will not matter to him. But, I also predict that over the next month or so "pass the bill now" will sink into oblivion. Maybe Obama will bring out buttons that say WUN for Whip Unemployment Now. It cannot be worse than his current strategy.
