It cetainly did not take long for the latest Obama re-election storyline to come out. The newest slant is that Democrats who used to be glum are now very encouraged about how well the president is doing. AP put out a story like that just an hour or so ago, and there are many more that have come through over the weekend. None of these are based upon polling; the stories are interviews with individual Democrats and supposedly speak for millions of folks across the country.
It is funny to look back at the revolving storyline for the Obama campaign. Last Spring it was "Obama is unbeatable." Then by the time of the debt ceiling debacle it had morphed into "the electoral college gives Obama a clear edge for re-election." Then two more months passed and the media moved to stories how changes in the demographic composition of the electorate gave Obama an advantage that would re-elect him. Now we are down to a few Democrats who get interviewed and say they feel better about Obama. Of course, the polling data continures to show that overall opinions about Obama's job performance is poor and has not improved for a long time.
These narratives keep getting closer and closer to pure despair among Democrats. The liberal media cannot believe that their selected candidate Obama is in real danger of losing in 2012. Accordingly, they write these stories more to reassure each other than for the edification of the public.
It makes me wonder how these media folks will react if they wake up in November 2012 to words that they never imagined they would hear: "president elect Gingrich." (or Romney or Perry or ...well you get the picture.
