Barbara Lee is a Democrat from California who is either delusional or incredibly dishonest. She made a speech on the House floor today in which she complained that Republicans in various states who have passed the requirement for voter identification to be shown at polling places prior to voting are seeking to supress minority turnout and return to the Jim Crow laws. According to Lee, the requirement to show a picture ID is the equivalent of a poll tax. Further, Lee pointed to the 2004 presidential election which she says was stolen in Ohio as proof that Republicans want to steal more elections.
Lee is so loopy that it is hard to know where to begin. I guess we should go chronologically. In 2004, George Bush beat John Kerry by about 125,000 votes in Ohio. Nationally, Bush beat Kerry by many millions of votes. Lee, however, still claims that the election was stolen. She is nuts.
Laws requiring voter ID at the polling place are were passed in my state of Connecticut a few years ago by a Legislature where Democrats have more than a 2-1 margin over Republicans. Does Lee think that these Democrats were trying to surpress minority turnout? I doubt it. The truth is that in order to fly in this country one needs to show a picture ID. In order to go into an office building in Manhattan, one needs to show a picture ID. In order to buy alcohol or even tabacco in many states, one needs to show a picture ID. If one wants to buy a gun, a picture ID is needed. If you want to cash a check, a picture ID is needed in many places. Even if you want to use a credit card in many stores, a picture ID is needed. In Barbara Lee's feeble mind, are all these instances of Jim Crow laws? I have listened to Lee before and I know that she is not the brightest person around, but even so, I do not think that she actually believes what she is saying. That means that Lee is just using this photo ID nonsense to falsely accuse Republicans of racism. It is despicable behavior. Lee should be censured by the House.
