It is quite funny to watch the Washington Post and other members of the liberal media try to figure out the surge in support for Newt Gingrich in the GOP. The latest effort comes in a story in the WaPo about how, despite the latest polls, Romney is still the overwhelming favorite for the nomination. Jonathan Bernstein writes that Romney may be ones of those candidates who do not inspire much enthusiasm, but the latest polling data suggests that Republican voters like him, they really like him. That's it; in an entire column, Bernstein has no other reason than this polling data for telling us that Romney is still a prohibitive favorite to win the nomination.
The truth is that Bernstein and other liberals just cannot seem to understand the appeal to Republicans and conservatives of a candidate like Gingrich who has interesting ideas based upon conservative priciples and who can also explain those ideas in a way that makes them clearly understood by the public. Even more confusing to the liberal media, Newt Gingrich does not get drawn into the petty nonsense and bickering that the media tries to set up as a trap for each of the GOP candidates. After watching all of these debates and appearances on the TV, the Republican audience has had a chance to see the real Gingrich rather than the portrait painted by the liberal media. And they like what they see!
Don't get me wrong. I, like many other conservatives, like Mitt Romney. He is a competent person who, unlike Obama, could actually achieve good things for the country. I have to clue the WaPo in, however, to the fact that just because I like him does not mean I will necessarily vote for him. I realize that the Washington Post and the other liberal media have planned for a campaign in which they can harrass Romney and focus on past inconsistencies. With Gingrich, however, the media will not be able to control the narrative. Sure, the media will try, but Gingrich will see through that effort and will keep talking about big ideas and Obama's miserable record. If the election is about Obama's record and about who has better plans for America, Obama has to lose. Clearly, Obama has no plans for a second term as of yet. If you doubt that, then realize that even an Obama acolyte like Chris Matthews has said this exact point. If Gingrich does not fall into the trap of the media to try to tie him up with nonsense, Obama cannot win.
No wonder the WaPo is upset.
