President Obama used his weekly radio address to proclaim that he would stand with the victims of the oil spill in the Gulf until they were fully compensated. Well good for him. Personally, I do not believe him, but whether or not he means it, my question remains this: where have you been for the last seven weeks?
Since the oil spill began, we have been treated to Obama or his spokesmen making threats to BP. We have also seen two (now three) brief visits by Obama to the area. We have been told that Obama has now prohibited all off shore drilling, then just deep water drilling, then all off shore drilling, then just deep water drilling. This indecisive stand against drilling has the effect of putting people out of work and raising energy prices, but it will not help with the oil spill.
What we have not seen from Obama or the Obamacrats is any course of action to deal with the results of the spill. No one could expect the administration to plug the hole. That is a job for BP and oil industry experts. It would have been nice if the White House had brought in other industry leaders to help with the process, but given the threats emanating from Obama, it is unlikely that Exxon or Chevron would run to put themselves in the cross hairs with BP. Still, although BP has been unsuccessful, it has at least followed a logical progression of methods attempting to stop the leak.
It is the dispersal of the oil in the water that has been so mishandled by Obama. The preapproved federal plan for dealing with spills was ignored. Even after a week went by, the federal government did nothing to follow this plan. The Lousiana state government's plan to save the coastal marshes was held up and mostly blocked by Obama's people. As a result, countless acres of fragile wetlands are now destroyed. Sure, maybe the sand berms would not have worked, but we will never know. Instead, we have dead marshes, dead birds, dead fish and wasteland. the inability of Obama to take charge has resulted directly in the devastation to the fisheries, wetlands and the whole ecosystem. It has also resulted in the very losses to the victims that Obama is now pledging to stand behind.
In short, Obama's speech today is akin to a statement by a murderer who announces that he is going to stand behind the deceased's family until they are fully compensated (of course by someone else.) It stinks, just like the dead marshes.
