Spin Cycle

In a funny turn of events, Eleanor Clift has published a piece in Newsweek about how 2010 is likely to bring a crop of one-term senators. Clearly, Clift now acknowledges that there will be massive Republican gains in the Senate (although she downplays the possibility that the GOP could actually take control of that chamber). Clift, however, points to 1980 when the GOP made big gains and took control only to lose that control again in 1986, six years later. Clift predicts that any GOP gains this year will melt away at the end of the first term for these new senators.
I find it more than a little encouraging that a blatant shill for the Democrats like Clift would already be discussing how the new Republican senators will lose in six years. We are still five months from election day and Clift seems to be throwing in the towel for this year already.
What she seems to ignore is the great benefit to the country that will come from getting senators like Reid, Boxer, Burris, Lincoln, and Specter out of the Senate. That is five fewer liberal blowhards to deal with. Even if the Democrats win these seats back in 2016, we may see senators who can at least recognize reality in these positions. Meanwhile, we will have at least six years of sanity in place.
