There was a march in London today to protest the 100th anniversary of the Balfour Declaration. Balfour is the proclamation issued by the British government in 1917 in which the UK said it looked with favor upon the establishment of a homeland for Jews in what was then part of the Ottoman Empire, namely Palestine. As the Brits got to control this region after the end of World War I, the Balfour Declaration became particularly important to the eventual establishment of the state of Israel. In any event, there were a few thousand people who marched in London on the anniversary.
These people have every right to express their opinions, but they seem to be a little late. Indeed, they seem to be like 70 years too late. (Next year marks 70 years since the birth of Israel.)
You have to wonder what will come next. Maybe the Brits will hold a march protesting the signing of the Treaty of Paris under which the American Revolutionary War ended 234 years ago. Maybe next they can protest freedom for India in 1947 or even the end of the Roman Empire over a thousand years ago.
