In another of those events in the Middle East that America's media ignores, control of the border crossings out of Gaza was handed over to the Palestinian Authority by Hamas. The terrorist group had controlled the border crossings ever since it forcibly ejected the Fatah party of Palestinian president Abbas from Gaza many years ago. Recently, under a deal brokered by Egyptian president Sisi, Hamas and Fatah reached a settlement. The turnover of the border crossings is just part of the implementation of that deal.
On another front, there was a meeting held between the leader of Hezbollah and the deputy leader of Hamas. This too is a major move towards resolving tensions among the terrorists. Hezbollah has been a principal supporter of the Assad regime in Syria while Hamas is tied to the Moslem Brotherhood which supports the Sunni rebels in that country. While both Hezbollah and Hamas oppose Israel, they have been at each other's throats due to Sunni/Shiite antagonism and the conflict in Syria.
Are these real moves towards resolution of the conflicts among the terror groups? Are these just one of the periodic photo ops that presage nothing more than continuing conflict in the future? The real answer is that we don't know. We may be watching a desperate Hamas trying to save some shred of its rule in Gaza and so compromising on point after point. Alternatively, it may be that Hezbollah is being directed by its controllers in Teheran to put on a show of unity in order to threaten Israel.
The truth is that it will take some time to see if any of this is real. Meanwhile, however, these are potentially major events that US media is not even bothering to cover. So what else is new?
