For the last few years, the USA and many other countries have battled against the establishment of a terrorist state in Iraq and Syria under the control of ISIS. As of now, ISIS has been nearly eradicated in these two countries. The ISIS thugs are now confined to some small towns and countryside. In a few more months, all organized ISIS units should be destroyed. ISIS will then, undoubtedly go back to operating in small cells, but it will no longer be the threat as it was at the height of the so called caliphate. In view of this response to Islamic terror in the form of ISIS, it seems strange that there is so little concern as another terrorist group, Hezbollah, takes control over Lebanon. Prime minister Harari just resigned in Beirut. It seems most likely that the new prime minister will be under the thumb of Hezbollah. Since Hezbollah is Shiite, and the majority of the Lebanese people are either Sunni or Christian, we may have the makings of another sectarian civil war in Lebanon of the sort that destroyed the country thirty years ago. Hezbollah will undoubtedly get help in such a struggle from Iran. I may also get help from the Assad regime in Syria. After all, Assad is a Shiite in a country that is more than three-quarters Sunni. Assad understands the ways to maintain control in such a situation, and the use of terror is a major tool in Syria.
When ISIS took control of half of Syria and Iraq, the world did little for a long time. Hopefully, if, as expected, Hezbollah takes control of Lebanon, the world will not sit by and watch. A terrorist state, indeed any terrorist state, is a threat to the peace of the world. Hezbollah needs to go quickly.
