Virginia and Elsewhere

Yesterday's election results are being treated like they indicate something important.  They don't.  There are just too few elections in too many one-sided places for there to be any real national trend that is meaningful.

New Jersey went back to being Democrat, like usual.  Chris Christie is amazingly unpopular and his legacy was the defeat of his lieutenant governor.

Virginia has been blue for a while now.  Hillary carried it against Trump, the only southern state to vote for the Clinton ticket.  The margin was pretty much in line with the final polls.

In New York City, the mayor was re-elected.  That's roughly about a surprising as the sun coming up at dawn.  Actually the GOP candidate did better than the one four years ago.

In some other minor races, the results were unsurprising.  There are still the legislative races in Washington which seem to have gone towards the Democrats, although we are still awaiting more definitive results from the mail in ballots.

In summary, there is no question that the Democrats did well.  There is also no question that the Democrats did pretty much as expected.

All day long, I keep hearing about how the election results portent some massive shift in 2018.  I don't buy that.  We will need to wait until 2018 to see how the electorate is trending.
