Now I've Heard Of Everything

In the Middle East today, there was a surreal moment that is almost inexplicable.  The subject is a tunnel being dug by Hamas from the Gaza strip, under the border with Israel and into Israeli territory.  The tunnel is of the same type that Hamas built in preceding years and then used to launch surprise attacks into Israel.  On some occasions, the Hamas forces came through the tunnels secretly and attempted to or actually were able to kidnap Israelis.  In 2014, there was a war between Israel and Hamas that centered almost entirely on these tunnels.  In any event, three days ago, the Israelis blew up the latest of these terror tunnels to be discovered.  The tunnel was still under construction, but the Israelis were aware of it and monitored that construction for many weeks.  When the tunnel got to the point where it could have led to an attack by Hamas, the Israelis drilled a hole into the ground and blew up the tunnel from the outside.  As it turns out, there were terrorists and workers in the tunnel at the time of the explosion and some of them were killed.  The Israelis turned back an invasion of Israeli territory by Hamas.

I'm getting too far afield.  Let's get back to the surreal moment.  Hamas today denounced Israel for its destruction of the tunnel and said that the Israelis would pay for this deed.  Think about that.  Hamas digs a tunnel into Israeli territory so that it can launch attacks against Israeli civilians.  This is the equivalent of a cross border invasion.  When Israel discovers the secret attack tunnel, Israel destroys that tunnel on Israel's own territory.  After that, the terrorist attackers lambaste Israel for defending itself.

This is perhaps the most bizarre news of the year.
