Paraguay was just certified as being malaria free. It's a great accomplishment for this country. It's doubly impressive because Paraguay is a poor country. Meanwhile a bit north of Paraguay, the country with one of the world's largest oil reserves, Venezuela, is seeing a vast outbreak of malaria. Venezuela had been malaria free just a few years ago. As the government and the economy have collapsed under socialism, however, the disease has made a comeback. There were nearly 500,000 reported cases last year. It's hard to imagine that a rich country like Venezuela could fail so badly at basic public health, but, hey, that's Socialism! Everyone is equally sick.
