A few days ago, NBC's White House correspondent reported that prior to the choice of Brett Kavanaugh for SCOTUS, Justice Kennedy had negotiated with the President over who the replacement would be prior to agreeing to resign. The report had no sources other than the usual unnamed ones. For anyone who knows much about Justice Kennedy, Supreme Court protocol and even President Trump, the report was obviously false, but it was out there nevertheless with the backing of NBC News.
The response to the story was immediate. It was denied by the White House, denied by Justice Kennedy and denounced by all sorts of people as false. Today, the reporter deleted the report.
Think about that for a moment. NBC's White House correspondent (and NBC) published a false story that accuses both a Supreme Court Justice and the White House of some very questionable behavior. The report is baseless and without any real source. It's just the wishful thinking of a second rate reporter who is hoping to affect public perception of what had happened. The real question is how NBC published it and let it stay out there for days. Now, the report has just been deleted rather than a formal retraction.
NBC should be embarrassed.
