Where Do They Find These People?

A few months ago, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court redrew the congressional districts in that state.  The Court is controlled by the Democrats while the legislature is controlled by Republicans.  It was no surprise that the new map is substantially more favorable to the Democrats than the old one was.  Still, the map alone is not enough.  The Democrats will still need to come up with acceptable candidates, something that they seem to have been unable to do.

A good example comes in the first district.  This district is comprised almost completely of Bucks County, a suburban area outside Philadelphia.  The PA Supreme Court made the district more heavily Democrat by adding in a heavily Democrat bit of adjoining Montgomery County.  The Republican incumbent was put on nearly every list of endangered congressmen.  Then the Democrats nominated a guy named Scott Wallace as their candidate.  Wallace is the grandson of Henry Wallace who was vice president for one term under FDR.  That seems, however, to be all that Scott Wallace has going for himself.

Wallace was raised in part in Bucks County, but he moved away many decades ago and only came back to run for Congress.  That doesn't play well in the district.  It is, however, Wallace's rather strange views that seem to be killing his chances.  Here are a few samples of these views:

1.  He opposed federal crime bills in the past.  A bill to fund the hiring of an extra 100,000 police across the country was too expensive, he said.

2.  He opposed laws that set up a crime victims "bill of rights". Those laws required that the victim of a crime be given notice of when the perpetrator would go on trial.  The laws also allowed the victim to speak at the sentencing hearing for the perp.  Wallace said that would be unfair.  To whom?

3.  Within months after 9-11, Wallace used the foundation he controlled to provide legal counsel for terrorists being held in Guantanamo.

4.  Wallace also used the foundation to fund groups engaged in anti-Israel activities including support for groups like the terrorists Hamas.  He now claims to be a strong supporter of Israel, but his actions make clear that is not true.

5.  Wallace opposed laws that allowed victims of sex abuse to testify in locations other than open court.  The victim was still subject to full cross examination, but didn't have to undergo the spectacle of being in open court for the testimony.

There's more, but these provide a pretty good flavor of the sorts of thing this wacko has done in the past.

One has to wonder how it is possible that this guy got nominated in a district in which the Democrats used to have a real chance of winning.

(By the way, the district that used to be rated a leaning towards a Democrat pickup, is now rated as leaning Republican.)
