Now that really did not take long

Michigan Democrat Bart Stupak announced this morning that he was not going to run for re-election to Congress. Stupak, as you may recall, is the pro-life Democrat who announced repeatedly that he would never vote for the Obamacare bill unless it had adequate protections in it that would bar the use of federal funds to pay for abortions. Of course, when the time for the vote came, Stupak voted for the bill even though by his own admission it did not have the language barring the use of federal funds for abortion. Instead, Stupak made a show of getting an executive order from Obama which said that no funds would be used for abortion. the chief difference between the law and the executive order, however, is that the law is binding and the Executive order means essentially nothing. It was just a fig leaf to cover Stupak's reneging on his repeated promises.

In today's announcement, Stupak claimed that his retirement had nothing to do with his healthcare vote. That was about as accurate as blaming the retirement on the failure of Butler to win the NCAA championship on Monday. I sometimes wonder why folks like Stupak feel compelled to lie about something that is so obvious. Do they actually believe that even 10% of the people will accept their statements as true?

In any event, there will be no Bart Stupak in the next Congress. At least that is a good development.
