Here are the first two paragraphs of an article from today's Guardian about events in Iran: "Close allies of Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, have been accused of using supernatural powers to further his policies amid an increasingly bitter power struggle between him and the country's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Several people said to be close to the president and his chief of staff, Esfandiar Rahim Mashaei, have been arrested in recent days and charged with being "magicians" and invoking djinns (spirits)."
To put it mildly, this is crazy stuff even for Iran. Still, the idea that Ahmadinejad might get the boot for disobeying Khamenei is so delicious that it is too bad that it is being overshadowed by the death of bin Laden. If the theocracy splits, there may be an opening in Iran for the protesters who have periodically hit the streets only to be met with overwhelming force sent by the government.
